Every year, the same story: duplicate gifts under the tree, sizes that don't fit, objects that end up at the back of a cupboard. A Christmas list solves the problem upfront. It tells your family and friends what would genuinely make you happy, without them having to guess or ask the question that ruins the surprise.

For the giver, the relief is just as real: no more hunting for an idea the night before Christmas Eve, no more keeping the receipt just in case. Everyone picks from a selection you made yourself, within their own budget, and turns up knowing they got it right.

The sweet spot is between mid-November and early December: early enough for your family to order without paying for express delivery, late enough for your wishes to still be current. If your family shops around Black Friday, move it up to early November — that is when a lot of gifts get decided.

A list is never set in stone. You can add an idea that comes to you one December evening, remove an item that went out of stock, or adjust the quantities you want. Anyone who already opened the list sees the updated version at the same link, without you having to send it again.

A paper Christmas list has its charm, but it has one big flaw: it doesn't know what others have already bought. A list you fill in online updates itself. Every time someone reserves a gift, it shows as taken for the next person, and nobody buys the same thing twice.

The best list is one where everyone can take part, whatever their budget. A twelve-year-old nephew and grandparents are not working with the same amount, and a list made only of €150 items makes everyone uncomfortable. Aim for around thirty ideas spread across several price ranges:

• small treats between €10 and €30: a book, a game, a cosmetic, an accessory;
• the core of the list between €30 and €80, where most gifts are actually chosen;
• one or two more ambitious wishes, to be given by several people together;
• experiences — a concert, a restaurant, a weekend away, a class — which take no space and are remembered far longer.

Duplicates are most common with children: between grandparents, uncles, aunts and godparents, the same toy seen in an ad easily turns up two or three times. The simplest fix is one list per child, with a few ideas at different budgets.

Match the ideas to their age: sensory toys and board books for toddlers, pretend-play and building toys between 3 and 5, board games, books and craft kits at school age, and then let teenagers put their list together themselves.

Some wishes are beyond one person's budget: a bike, a camera, a trip. Don't take them off your list for that — they act as a rallying point for anyone who wants to join in.

Organising it comes down to three rules. Appoint one person to coordinate and front the purchase, set an amount per contributor rather than letting everyone improvise, and have the gift reserved as soon as the group is formed: it then shows as taken, and nobody buys it twice while you sort things out.

For younger children, the letter to Santa is part of the magic of the holidays, and it would be a shame to skip it. The two go together very well: the child writes or draws their letter, then the parents turn it into a Christmas list shared with the family.
